On Wednesday I received a fresh copy of The Revenge of Seven* (RoS), the fifth book in the Lorien Legacies series. I've spent all of Thursday to read the 314 page long adventure following our favourite characters Six, John (aka Number Four), Sam and Nine in their epic fight against the dangerous Mogadorians. I'm very proud to present you today my review of the gripping novel. The book is officially out on the 26th August 2014.
Synopsis
After the fight with Setrakus Ra, the betrayal of Five and the death of Eight, the Garde is yet again split up:
- Ella, kidnapped by Setrakus Ra, is abducted into space, where she is forced by the Mog leader to bend down to his powers and to cooperate. Ella’s been told, she is related to Setrakus and he marks her with a powerful Mogadorian charm, which connects both of them. She resists and discovers a new legacy, which might be the key to his downfall.
- John, Sam, Malcolm, Adam and Sarah receive unexpected help from the alien conspiracy blog They Walk Amongst Us. To save time, Sarah splits up from the group and goes on a mission herself. She follows a trace to the editors of the blog and is rather surprised when she finds out, who is running the website now. In the meantime, John, Sam, Malcolm and Adam plan an attack on a Mogadorian base in Washington. They crash the base and take it over. This time it’ll be the Loric who are one step ahead in the battle for earth.
- Six, Nine and Marina are lost in a swampland but find an abandoned NASA base, that’s been used as a research centre by the enemies. They find Eight’s body there and nearly bump into Five, who regrets his actions and struggles with inner conflicts where to belong and whom to trust.
These are the three plot strands of RoS and it becomes very clear, that the Garde will face something far more bigger than they've expected. What is MogPro and why could the Mogadorians execute their long term plan in taking over the galaxy so successful without any notice or resistance from anyone? Our heroes realise the true extent of evil power and the events about to come.
Structure
RoS has the familiar episodic structure with changing point of views. This time, the events are mainly told by Ella, Six and John. Thanks to the simple sentence structure and use of language, the book reflects the familiar tone and is easy to read. The writing style contains a lot of direct speech, which makes the story livelier than in previous books. The reading flow feels effortless and makes the book a true page-turner.
The access to the story is flawless and events unfold at a good pace. With 314 pages this is the shortest in the series and it can be read in a day.
Criticism
RoS starts exactly where The Fall of Five (book 4) ended and we’re straight into the action. There are no long recap stories about recent events and the story develops quickly.
This part of the series focuses more on the Mogs and thanks to Adam, we get some really helpful insights into the mindset and behaviour of the enemy. It was interesting to read about the Mogs motivations and motifs. I enjoyed that, as with the information given the stereotypical depiction of pure evil and good is left, which gives the Mogadorians an actual reason and motivation which applies some depth to the story.
This is the second to last book in the Lorien Legacies and whilst the Mogs are highly organised and plan their invasion, the Garde feels somehow lost. I wished the Garde would mess around less and would seriously start to think about a plan. They had three books to come up with ideas and they need to pull their shit together. It feels like things aren't moving for the Garde at all and it would be very unrealistic if all of their success would come in the final book.
When John and his friends take over the Mog base, Malcolm finds video material of his imprisonment and torture. He analysis this material in the hope to gain useful information. The tortured Malcolm does indeed reveal some major facts about the fate of the Loric and how to restart Lorien. But how does he know all of this? Has Pittacus told him? But then, Malcolm would remember and would have told the Garde already after he joined them in the last book, wouldn't he? Has this knowledge maybe been planted without him knowing? It would explain why he hasn't told the Garde. Anyway, it wasn't explained why Malcolm revealed such information under torture, but obviously can’t remember, otherwise he would have told the Garde by now.
I was really annoyed by Nine this time. He isn't contributing anything useful at all, bar dump and cheesy comments, which very much reminded me of Kellan Lutz in Twilight. His jokes are inappropriate and totally out of place. Overall, Nine is rather passive, so was John. Usually, he is handled as the leader but this time he is overshadowed by Adam, who is far more organised and showed some impressive leadership skills.
I found the title misleading. Number Seven, Marina, isn't really revenging anyone, in fact, she barely has her moments. She is a bit more aggressive and offensive which made her a bit more of a fighter. I liked that change in character, as she usually is very innocent and conservative.
The Final Book: Some Assumptions and Speculations
I hope the final chapter in the Lorien Legacies will be longer and I'm expecting a showdown worthy of the series. Since, 2011 a title was released in August each year, so I’m hoping the last book will be out in August 2015.
- It says inside the book cover, that Pittacus has been on earth for 12 years and is preparing for the battle for earth, so he will make an appearance.
- There’s a connection between Ella and Setrakus Ra now, so I assume she will be the key for his downfall.
- This book was mainly from Six’s, John’s and Ella’s point of view, so I expect Sam and Marina, as they had a voice in previous books.
- Story-wise good will succeed over evil, but I think the Garde will fail in restarting Lorien. I think they will find peace on earth and be accepted by humans.
- Now, the title. Each of the remaining Garde has been dedicated a title, except for Eight, so I assume Eight will be closing the series. That leaves lots and lots of room for speculation. Eight has been killed, but if he is going to be part of the title, it’ll mean he will make somehow a comeback. At least his presence will be important to the plot.
- Eight will be the key in the final title, so will be the battle. I assume the noun in the title will be a strong content word that sums up the massive intergalactic fight. My ideas about a possible title are: The Battle of Eight, The Awakening of Eight, The Spirit of Eight, The Visions of Eight, The Return of Eight or The Pride of Eight.
Anyway, these are just assumptions and some play around with the hints that you can find in the book.
Is There A Book After The Revenge Of Seven?
Yes there is. There's definitely one more and rumor has it, James Frey considers a second book to give the Lorien Legacies a worthy ending. However, what is definitely going to happen is the series will end. Either in 2015 or 2016. But don't get upset, James Frey has released already a new addictive YA series called 'Endgame'. You can find a review of the first book here and I also met James in Bath, which you can find here.
Final Word
RoS was a good read and thanks to the simple linguistic structure a page-turner. Though the book captures the atmosphere and voice of previous chapters in the series, I found it a bit bland and it hasn't wowed me over (in the sense of that not much is actually happening). The Garde kids are lost and need a leader to sort them out and to come up with a long term plan instead of breaking up all over again following single missions. I still love and enjoy the series but I hope that the final book will come up with a massive WTF finale including some twists and turns, which I think the overall story really, really needs.
Have you read the books? If so, which one is your favourite? Are you excited to read about the next chapter in the Lorien Legacies next week?
Till next time,
xx CAZ xx

I love your work. It would mean the world if you checked out my cartoons and to give your opinion? Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Lawrence! Will have a look in the morning :)
ReplyDelete[…] 23 August 2014: My review is now live. Please find it here. Hope you’ll […]
ReplyDeleteLove your review but I would like to point out that you said the reason for Malcolm not telling the garde secrets already was not revealed but it was. In made many mentions of the most wiping his memories while he was held prisoner and when he was about to show them I believed he even mentioned that after seeing the video he didn't even remember it. Also I do believe it explicitly or maybe implicitly says that pittacus told him and that's how he knows other than that one paragraph you wrote I completely agree with and love what you wrote. In your speculations I found the idea of pittacus becoming a part of it interesting because I had not yet thought of that. ☺
ReplyDeleteHi Jessie, thanks so much for your comment and yes you're right, that makes sense. Have you finished reading the book? What did you think about the plot? x
ReplyDeleteFirstly, thank you for taking the time to write a review, it's always a pleasure to read something from a fellow fan. Secondly, I noticed you mentioned the Garde not getting the chance to "restart Lorien," and instead you predict they'll just settle on Earth. That was covered in the book itself, we don't have to wait for book 6 to know that there will not be a trip back to Lorien; Earth is their permanent home now. I noticed you didn't really mention anything about Sam developing Telekinesis, which, I believe, based off of the scenes in the Sanctuary, will occur in several more humans. It appears, at least to me, that whatever "presence" was on Lorien that gifted the Garde initially, has been relocated to Earth, and will now be gifting "worthy" humans with legacies. To me, this was forshadowed very early in the book, and is something I find incredibly exciting. It opens up an entire new avenue for the human resistance, and makes it more likely that Earth and humanity will succeed. While six teenagers with super powers have proven to be strong, it is just very unlikely that they would have been enough to save the entire planet without significant help, which they will now receive. What did you think about that plot development? How do you think it will play out in the final novel? I apologize for the long post by the way, I just really enjoy this series and look forward to discussing it with like minded individuals. Thanks again for your time!
ReplyDeleteHi George, thanks so much for your comment and your ideas. I didn't include Sam because I thought it might be too much of a spoiler as I published my post a few days before the release. I find it very fascinating, too how things developed in the book and that the humans will start to fight back as well. I can imagine Sarah might develop something similar as Sam, anything can be possible in the last book.
ReplyDeleteHi Caz.
ReplyDeleteIt's really hard to find a fan from where i live. I have to screen thru websites to have discussions with fans from all over the world. Actually i just finished reading R07 and i totally agree with your review. Plus, I have to strongly agree with you on how the final event will turn out. The mogs progress is very advanced compared to the Garde. They basically own the government and military (or used to after Sanderson betrayed them) and what do garde have? Six super-powered kids with lack of planning and leadership. it would be interesting to see how the authors will wrapped this up.
Also i would like to know your opinion with the human receiving legacies. Yes it would be a good reinforcement for the Garde but legacies takes time to develop or needed some training to get used to. Right?
Anyway, keep up the good work!
-Shamil-
Hi Shamil, thanks so much for your comment! Glad you've enjoyed reading RoS as much as I did! I find it very interesting how the plot has changed but I'm not sure if it might be a bit rushed. I think it should have started earlier in the series as you correctly said that legacies need time to develop. It also feels rushed because it will all be happening in the final book it might be very ambitious to squeeze it all into one book, unless it is longer than 300 pages. x
ReplyDeleteI've just finished the book and trawled through the internet in search of people who's done the same! I don't think Sam was the one responsible for the actions in the end. It just seems a little chaotic if humans began developing powers as I feel this would dilute the importance of the Garde. Perhaps Eight will return. I've forgotten, did One leave Adam's mind at a certain point? If they don't figure out a counter to Ella's charm, it doesn't look bright for her in the next book
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks so much for taking the time to read my review and to comment. Very much appreciated! Someone on Twitter mentioned that Eight won't return but will stand for the number of Lorics fighting. Like an ambiguity play they did with the title The Power of Six. Found this very interesting, because Adam is technically loric ;)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the book very much and was sad it was such a fast read! I think that since there were 9 elders perhaps there will be a limited number of humans gaining legacies. However, I feel that the garde will need more than a few people to beat the mogs. So I'm conflicted.
ReplyDeleteI wish Four had been challenged more and discovered more power. Four feels like the strategic character and yet he still has grown very little which is disappointing. I feel he is ultimately the garde member that can beat Setrakus Ra (inherited Pittacos Lore legacies making him the only one able to beat him) Ella will be imperative to Fours success I think of course.
I hope the final book gives us time to see the garde come together and gain confidence. And also discover fully what they are capable of.
Hi Nichole, thanks so much for taking the time to read the review and to comment! Well said, I really hope Four grows in the last book and I'm expecting some tremendous shifts so that the garde will succeed over the Mogs. I just hope it won't feel rushed...because we had four books now showing clueless teenagers and it would be unrealistic if they gain the superpowers they'll need to defeat the enemy within a few pages. x
ReplyDeleteI agree and hope he takes his time developing the finale!
ReplyDelete[…] In the meantime, let’s check out what other people are saying about the book: My Book Musings Lunch Break Adventures […]
ReplyDeleteI think only a few of the human will gain legacies, if it isnt that way it will all be chaótic.
ReplyDeleteaaaaahhh this book is breaking my heart. T____T I like The General actually, still hoping he somehow turns to Garde side. He's cruel, but nobody is totally cruel, right? From supplement books, I can see he's listening to his wife while making decision about Adam's life, which is a proof that he is still having a little kindness inside.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the movie I am Number Four, and Kevin Durand, as the Commander/General really inspires me to create my own hero for my novel. Hopefully they make sequel so that I can see Kevin Durand playing Commander again.
bye bye, The General.
loved the review. However, am I the only one that thinks the ending was completely HORRENDOUS? i spent about 15 minutes checking the internet thinking my book is missing pages... there was pretty much no ending to the book, no connection to the following one nothing... i d really like to hear other opinions on it.
ReplyDeleteomg....me too, I read it on a borrowed Nook and thought that the download screwed up! I was soooo mad that it ended like that. it made me not want to continue reading the next books, that was a terrible way to end that book. I couldn't agree more, I searched and searched for more pages too!
ReplyDeleteI was gutted as well as this is the shortest of all in the series. It was just cut off...not even like a cliffhanger. Caz x
ReplyDeleteI thought that this book was awful. As you mentioned the Garde have just messed around without achieving anything and appear to have no plan. Also, I will be extremely annoyed if humans do begin to develop legacies as it will mean that the Garde's only purpose is to survive until they can activate Lorien and give legacies to humans. Additionally, why aren't they returning to Lorien Instead they are doing what the Mogs are trying to do and are using another planet to take over and implement their own customs and beliefs. This book was even more infuriating due to how ridiculously competent Sam, Malcolm, Sarah and Mark are in comparison to the Garde. I agree that the Garde's incompetence is the main issue, as how can a handful of untrained Garde who don't possess all of their legacies hope to defeat the Mogadorians when an entire planet of the Garde couldn't on Lorien? Overall, I feel that this book was rushed to meet a deadline or something like that and in doing so has potentially ruined the entire series.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else want 4 and 6 to get together? I really don't like Sarah's character and it all seems a bit awkward.I really liked 4 and six's relationship in the power of six.
ReplyDeleteI think that sam didnt develop a legancy it could be that pitacus woke up and it would be the help that the world needs couse if the human develop legancies wich one would be tha case of the garde the earth would be a little lorien while the mogs are conquering it again
ReplyDeleteI think it was sam because the energy being that was in eight inside the temple said he can not give the special abilities that they are earned and sam is i think worthy of the them
ReplyDeleteI couldn't disagree more about the negative feelings about the ending if you think about it the lorien race are technically more advanced humans the spirit being is what gave them their powers in the first place and that being has been doing it long before them as well. I think sam will receive the power of telekineses as a basis and maybe the chosen and deserving humans will get just that, meaning the garde will still be more powerful. Good ending but it was a lil short and sudden felt more like it would be part 1 of the final book
ReplyDeleteWait - did we read the same book? The General played a very, very small role in this book. He was only in the fight in the Mog suburban housing development and was killed, so how could he turn to the Garde's side? Sorry, I'm confused by your comment.
ReplyDeleteYes, you're right (and I was going to mention the same thing).
ReplyDeleteCaz - if you remember in, I think, the second book John & Six went down into the underground bunker Malcom had and found a large (8ft tall) skeleton and later (in the 3rd book, I believe) asked Malcom about it and he said it was Pittacus. He said that PL and other Lorien had been coming to Earth preparing things for after the Mog invasion of Lorien. Malcom has also mentioned many times that the Mog's did something to his mind and he has huge gaps in his memory because of their experiments on him. That would def explain why he didn't say anything - he just didn't remember.
Anyway...I haven't read to the end yet (on ch 15), but I hope to finish today (I started reading it last night). If you have any suggestions for other series after I finish this one, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!
Hi Michelle, thank you so much for your comments and welcome to my little corner of the internet! Thank you for reminding me about these details. I totally forgot about them. That happens when you only read one book of the series per year :) When the Lorien Legacies finishes, you can start reading Endgame. It is written by the same author, same writing style and action packed. If you go to my book recommendations (scroll down the sidebar on the right) you'll find a review and an event in Bath where I met James Frey. Hope to speak soon x
